some formation, such as " single column," or " double column," or " column of fours," according as the width of the road, and nature of the ground permitted. Any one who has been on active service with Indian Field Hospitals and Bearer Columns, must have observed the want of order that prevails, and how the men straggle all over the line of march. I think that all the men of the A. H. N. C. should, therefore, be taught the rudiments of drill, and this could easily be clone by a non-commissioned officer of the nearest N. I. Regiment. When once taught, half-an-hour, once a month, would be sufficient to keep them up to the mark. Again, why should not these men be armed ? I do not, of course, propose to give them firearms, and swords would be worse than useless, bnt each man of the A. H. N. C. might be armed with a hogspear, with a spike in the lower end to stick in
